Squid Game season two will return to Netflix on December 26, 2024. This will no doubt come as a relief to fans who have been waiting three years for the show's return.

Fans were treated to a first look at the trailer and a glimpse at Gi-hun's transformation in season two back in February, and now Netflix has followed up with another sneak peek to keep the anticipation bubbling.

Squid Game'ssequel was officially confirmed back in June 2022. That's unsurprising, given its popularity and viewing success (its first season still stands as one of the most-watched series on Netflix).

The to-the-deathbattle of wits captured imaginations worldwide – and finally brought to some people's attention the stream of amazing Korean content that's available to subscribers worldwide.

So what details do we have about the new season two episodes? Here's everything you need to know about Squid Game season two – including that new sneak peek for the upcoming episodes.

When will Squid Game season 2 be released?
Fans better start practising their 'Red Light, Green Light' moves, because Squid Game is set to return on December 26, 2024.

The announcement was made on July 31, when it was also revealed that the third season, due to air in 2025, will be the show's last.

Talking about the wrapping up of the Squid Game journey, Hwang Dong-hyuk shared: "I am thrilled to see that the seed that was planted in creating a new Squid Game grow and bear fruit through the end of this story.

"We'll do our best to make sure we bring you yet another thrill ride."

He also promised that "the fierce clash" between Seong Gi-hun and Front Man's worlds "will continue into the series finale with season 3, which will be brought to you next year".

How many seasons of Squid Game are there?
It's been confirmed that Squid Game season three will be the show's third and final season.

However, for those still keen to see more chilling games, the popular spinoff reality game show Squid Game: The Challenge is also confirmed to be returning for a second season.

How many episodes will Squid Game season 2 have?
It hasn't been officially confirmed how many episodes will make up the second instalment of the Netflix hit.

However, Squid Game's debut season spanned nine episodes, with their lengths ranging from around 30 minutes to the one-hour mark.

Who's in the Squid Game season 2 cast?
Considering the nature of the Squid Game, don't expect too many familiar faces in the upcoming season. Out of the first season's 456 competitors, all of them but one died.

But the one player we know will return is Lee Jung-jae's character Seong Gi-hun – who, after making it out of the game alive, found himself tempted back in after seeing someone else recruited for the mega-millions life-or-death game.

Wi Ha-joon will also reprise the role of police detective Jun-ho, while Gong Yoo will be back as the Salesman.

Some new players have also been announced for Squid Game season two including It's Okay Not to Be Okay's Park Gyu-young, singer Jo Yu-ri, Kang Ae-sim, Itaewon Class' Lee David, Sweet Home's Lee Jin-uk, rapper Choi Seung-hyun (aka T.O.P), Roh Jae-won, and DP's Won Ji-an.

It's a solid mixture of male and female players. That will hopefully stem the fan backlash after the first cast update, which featured an all-male lineup of Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Sung-hoon plus actor, musician and breakdancer Yang Dong-geun (aka YDG).

It's a relief to know women will have a chance to be ritually slaughtered, as well as men, in the deadly games of the second season!

Previous players – including actors Park Hae-soo, Oh Yeong-su and Jung Hoyeon – could make a comeback, but perhaps only in flashbacks as Gi-hun takes on the games once again, remembering his fallen friends.

"So many characters died, especially beloved ones died. I'm sorry I killed them so easily; I didn't know this was coming," series creator Hwang previously told Reuters, adding how he wants to "revive Ji-young, but her best friend Sae-byeok also died" so he's "thinking what to do".

What will happen in Squid Game season 2?
Squid Game's season two renewal announcement was followed up on August 1 with the official synopsis which read: "Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 remains determined to find the people behind the game and put an end to their vicious sport.

"Using this fortune to fund his search, Gi-hun starts with the most obvious of places: look for the man in a sharp suit playing ddakji in the subway.

"But when his efforts finally yield results, the path toward taking down the organisation proves to be deadlier than he imagined: to end the game, he needs to re-enter it."

Deadlier? Many will remember it got plenty deadly enough the first time round – which can only mean severe upping of the stakes.

"I have no idea what will happen or the scale of it." Lee Jung-jae told People.

"The key figure who controlled the workings of the games in season one was Lee Byung-hun, so it seems that the two of us will be the central figures of this next story," he added to Ilgan Sports (via allkpop).

However, it's hard to imagine how Gi-hun could defeat the game's creators even with his newfound wealth – at least not without getting his hands dirty.

In season one, he managed to escape the burden of guilt that many felt after taking a life, simply because he didn't take a life – at least not directly.

We can't imagine he'd be that fortunate the second time around. This would definitely add new layers to the emotional arc he's about to embark on.

Additionally, Wi Ha-Jun's police officer Hwang Jun-ho was a great means of opening up the "back end" of the games to the audience. So hopefully Hwang Dong-hyuk will find a way to keep the other Hwang alive and investigate the origin of the games – or at least his brother's part in it.

There's also the big plot hole that the Front Man's involvement seemed to generate. If his brother was a former winner of the Squid Game tournament, how did no-one in his family notice that he'd suddenly become rich?

And why did Jun-ho find his disappearance mysterious this time around if he didn't a few years back when his brother was busy winning the games?

Of course, the pressure will be on for cast and crew to deliver a second season that thrills as much as the first – so at the very least we can expect something much more elaborate.

Is there a Squid Game season 2 trailer?
Yes! Squid Game has offered us another glimpse into season two, following its previous teaser trailer on August 12.

This time around it doesn't reveal much beyond the fact that Lee Jung-jae's Seong Gi-hun has ditched his bold statement red hair and been awarded his original games player number 456. But at this point, we're rabid for details and we'll take what we can get.

Squid Game is now available to watch on Netflix.
